REVIVE! Opioid Overdose Reversal

Opioid overdoses have claimed many lives, and the Fredericksburg area has not been immune to the escalating opioid epidemic.  Naloxone can reverse overdoses and save lives. In an effort to stem the rising tide of deaths, we now offer REVIVE! training.

The free training helps individuals learn how to recognize an opioid overdose and how to use naloxone to reverse an overdose.

Who should take REVIVE?

Anyone who has a friend or relative using opioids should attend a training session. Each attendee will receive a free REVIVE! kit provided by the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services. The kit includes the supplies needed to administer naloxone.

The opioid antidote can be purchased at pharmacies without a prescription in Virginia. Participants who complete the REVIVE! course through RACSB will have the opportunity to receive a free dose of the drug.

What is naloxone?

Naloxone is a prescription medicine that reverses opioid overdoses. It works by temporarily blocking the effects of opioids and helps the person to breathe again. Naloxone is the generic name but can be found under the branded names of Narcan and Evzio.

Why learn to reverse overdoses?

Fatal drug overdose has been the leading method of unnatural death in Virginia since 2013, and opioids have been the driving force behind the increases in fatal overdoses. Numbers are still being crunched, but epidemiologists estimate that more than 1,500 Virginians lost their lives to drug overdoses in 2019. 

Naloxone gives individuals a second chance at life and the opportunity to seek treatmentOpioid Use Disorder is complex and serious–but there is hope. When community members have the knowledge and tools to save lives, they can help our area residents achieve a brighter future.
