These specialized court programs aim to provide treatment over incarceration and to address the underlying causes of crime. In our region, there are three specialty dockets that address the needs of people facing criminal charges relating to substance abuse, mental health issues, or veteran status.
- Recovery Court: Formerly known as drug court, these programs help divert non-violent offenders from jail by offering substance abuse treatment over incarceration. Instead of jail, participants undergo an intensive combination of treatment and court supervision. We provide the substance abuse treatment for adult and juvenile participants. The program includes frequent drug testing, substance abuse therapy, and supervision. The Rappahannock Regional Recovery Court is a collaborative effort among several community partners. Recovery Court graduates have their charges dismissed after they’ve completed the program, a process that takes at least one year.
- Spotsylvania Behavioral Health Docket: This program launched in 2022 for people with serious mental health issues who have nonviolent felonies. It provides intensive treatment and court supervision for people who committed crimes in Spotsylvania and who live in Fredericksburg City or the counties of King George, Spotsylvania, and Stafford. We provide therapy and peer support for this program.
- Veterans Docket: The Rappahannock Regional Veterans Docket offers substance use disorder and mental health treatment to U.S. military veterans involved in the criminal justice system. The program combines treatment, court supervision, and mentorship in place of incarceration.
