Mental health crises don’t happen on a schedule–so RACSB provides emergency services around the clock.
Emergency Services Therapists offer brief crisis counseling and referrals for community resources. Our trained therapists also triage for psychiatric hospitalizations. Clinicians provide pre-screening to determine eligibility for involuntary admission and assist with voluntary admissions to psychiatric facilities.
If you or someone you know is experiencing a psychiatric crisis, our Emergency Services are here to help.
Emergency Services Therapists partner with local law enforcement to staff a Crisis Assessment Center in the Emergency Department at Mary Washington Hospital. This provides a space for law enforcement and Emergency Services Therapists to assess and monitor individuals under emergency custody orders. It could take up to eight hours to find a bed in a psychiatric facility.
Additionally, Emergency Services Therapists help connect individuals with outpatient services and the crisis stabilization program.

Crisis Stabilization Program
The Sunshine Lady House for Mental Health Wellness and Recovery opened in 2009, with help from local philanthropist Doris Buffett.
This 12-bed residential facility serves individuals experiencing acute psychiatric crisis. It is the home for RACSB’s Crisis Stabilization Program, which began in 2007.
Guests could receive up to 15 days of treatment: 24-hour supervision, art therapy, group sessions, individual counseling, medication evaluation, therapeutic arts, acupuncture, and more.
Before individuals enter the home, they are prescreened by RACSB Emergency Services. Throughout their stay, guests receive a variety of services aimed at mental wellness. These services are provided by a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, counselors, nurses, qualified mental health providers, and contracted healthcare professionals.
Everything in the Sunshine Lady House is meant to aid in recovery from the colorful artwork–some of which was painted by former guests of the program patients–to the sleek furniture, stainless-steel appliances, and soothing color schemes.
RACSB also uses the home to provide intensive supports for individuals beginning its Medication Assisted Treatment program.

Crisis Intervention Teams
Often, law enforcement officers are the first people to interact with an individual experiencing a mental health crisis. We offer specialized training to help law enforcement officers respond to these situations with empathy and understanding.
These classes are part of a growing national effort to improve the interaction between police and those with mental illnesses. A state grant provided money to create the Rappahannock Crisis Intervention Team in 2009. Since then, more than 400 law enforcement officers have been trained to recognize mental illnesses, to talk calmly to somebody in the middle of a crisis and to identify community resources that could help.
